Free Poetry Workshop – this weekend!

Celebrate National Poetry Month with us!

Join Carla Hartsfield of CAA-Niagara at the St. Catharines Library where she will present a hands-on Poetry Writing Workshop where participants will explore Where Does a Poem Come From?

Carla will guide us through various editing and writing exercises including writing in the ghazal form. Participants are asked to bring a favourite poem to discuss with the class and a piece of their own work for the editing exercises.

More about Carla:

Carla Hartsfield is a classically trained pianist, poet and visual artist. Her first book of poetry, The Invisible Moon, was short-listed for the League of Canadian Poet’s Gerald Lampert prize. Her next volume, Sleeps Fire Never was added to the Sylvia Plath archives as it included a series of poems based on that poet’s life. Your Last Day On Earth was long-listed for the BC ReLit Awards. Two chapbooks have recently followed. Carla was a Mentor Artist with the RCM’s program, Learning Through the Arts, for many years, helping at-risk youth in Toronto schools.

Lately, Carla has been working with form, and has published many of her glosas in Grain, The Dalhousie Review, The Literary Review of Canada and The New Quarterly. Carla’s essay on writing glosas “Pencil and Ink”, can be viewed online at The New Quarterly’s website. She is dedicated to helping artists find their way, through teaching writing and music.

36th ANNUAL POETRY ANTHOLOGY CONTEST

The Niagara Branch of the Canadian Authors Association is pleased to be launching its 36th Annual Poetry Anthology contest for residents of Ontario.

Submission Rules:

  • Entries must be in English, previously unpublished and not under consideration elsewhere.
  • Number of entries is unlimited, but no more than six poems from one poet will be included in the anthology.

Prizes:

  • First Prize-$300
  • Second Prize-$200
  • Third Prize-$100

Entry Deadline: May 31, 2021

  • Contest results will be posted on our website in late July, early August.
